Real Taco Pie
Do you have leftover potatoes and no taco shells or tortillas? Then this is your recipe! I always have leftover mashed potatoes and now I know a way to use them! I love this because it is so simple, different, but tastes absolutely delicious!
Ingredients
1/4 cup butter
2/3 cup milk
1 package taco seasoning mix
2 1/2 cups mashed potato flakes (you could also use left over mashed potatoes and omit the butter and milk)
1 pound ground beef
1/2 cup chopped onion
1/2 cup salsa
1 cup shredded lettuce
1 medium tomato, chopped
1 cup sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
Sour cream, optional
Directions
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In a medium sauce pan, melt butter. Add milk and 2 tablespoon taco seasoning. Remove from heat and add potato flakes until incorporated. Press mixture into the bottom of a 10-inch pan.
2. Bake for 7-10 minutes until it just BARELY turns golden brown.
3. In a medium skillet, cook beef and onions until beef is browned and cooked through. Drain. Add Salsa and remaining taco seasoning. Cook until bubbly.
4. Pour into crust. Bake for 15 minutes, or until crust is golden brown.
5. Let cool for 5 minutes. Top with cheese, lettuce, and tomatoes. Cut and serve with sour cream.

DeleteI believe she's saying it's instant potatoes, she did put mashed potato flakes everyone. That's why you heat the butter,milk and then add the taco seasoning to those then take off heat and add the the instant potatoes.

ReplyDeleteBut I'm sorry, I'm having trouble believing that the picture is showing potatoes for the crust. The directions say to put the potatoes in the bottom of the pan, and the picture shows some type of crust going up the sides. Sure looks like pie crust to me.

DeleteThe reason the crust look the way it look because u make the spud consistency thick enough to form the pie crust pan. That's the key to forming the pie b easy with milk. I'm gonna make it. N u have to pre bake the crust before other ingredients is added.

DeleteI'm making this (in the oven now) with a couple changes..I added melted butter, taco seasoning and hot water to some bisquick and pressed it into a 9x13 casserole dish-baked for 12 minutes. I used ground chicken. After browning the chcken with the taco seasoning I added refried beans to it.

DeleteOk so I made it last night with the potatoe crust. There is NO way that picture is potatoe crust, especially since you add taco seasoning to the potatoes they are bright orange/brown. This pic has to be a pie shell. It was still good just messy as the potatoes were so soft. It turned out to be more like a taco casserole.

ReplyDeleteThe mashed potatoes form the crust! You press them into pie plate then bake the crust till barely golden (as per recipe) THEN you add the filling and bake some more. It does work and looks the same

ReplyDeleteSorry for all the confusion regarding the crust. In the picture it does look like a pie crust and I smooshed the potatoes up the sides so the potato layer was very thin. I have made this a few times, both with a thin crispy crust and a thicker mushier crust. Both ways are good. I definitely prefer the thinner crispy (well crispier, not potato chip hard) crust and should have specified in the instructions.

The refried beans addition sounds divine!! I have seen a slow cooker recipe with refried beans and meat before. Has anyone tried that?
Having been sent this in the UK to try by a friend, reading all the comments it would seem that people are more interested in trying to convince themselves that the pic is fake and that you're a charlatan rather than just trying it and saying mmm that's yummy. Potato crust worked fine for me. Some people need to get out more and stop looking up conspiracy theories all day ;) lol

ReplyDeleteIt was pretty good, definitely made it a bit more sturdy. It still was pretty much a blob on the plate though. I was thinking of adding a bit of pepper jack and or sharp cheddar to the mixture when I try it again along with the beans. That might make it less loose. It's how we make filling for chimichangas in our home.
wonder if you could use Tortilla shells as the crust, arrange 1-3 in bottom of pie plate, bake until golden then fill . Has anyone tried this option?

Fat Free cresent rolls for the crust , one .lb cooked hamburger (meat Lean)with taco seasoning mix in ranch style beans, rotel tomatoes ,spray pan with butter spray , spread cresent rolls out on pan cook crust til golden brown spread your filling mixture on top and use fat free mozerella cheese bake for about 15 to 18 minutes WONDERFUL !!!! you can double recipe if needed

ReplyDeleteI have been making this for years for my family. I would make tacos for supper one night and with the leftovers I make taco pie. I have used flour tortillas, pie crust and cresent rolls. I like the cresent roll best. I crush some taco chips in the bottom, them put the meat mixture on top and frost it with sour cream. I top it off with shredded cheese on top and then bake for about 30 minutes at 350. Top with lettuce and tomatoes.

ReplyDeleteI just made this tonight,and wasn't sure what to do for the crust. So I did a cornmeal mix (cornmeal, cornmeal flour,.milk, butter and a bit of sugar.) Kids loved it but next time I think I'd make it as thin as possible.

DeleteYes it does matter - because the recipe says it is a potato crust (put only in the bottom of the pie pan), and the picture definitely shows a pie crust. I really don't care what is used for the crust - just be honest about it - and don't show a picture of something different than the actual recipe!!

Maybe the picture is real, maybe not - but it sure makes me want to try it! When the pic is a glob - I don't want to try something as much - even if people rave about it. DeleteIt's an old Pampered Chef image and recipe. Maybe this blog could supply an image of her own to show how her pie turned out. People should always cite their sources or at the very least give recipe credit to who created it. :) Anyone can copy and paste. I haven't tried the recipe yet, but it looks really good. I could eat tacos in any shape or form a couple times a week.

ReplyDeleteThe crust looks like the Pillsbury Taco Pie crust which is one 8 oz can of crescent rolls. You lay the crescent triangles in a pie pan and press them together to form the crust.

I tried makin it but the potatoe don't get crispy it falls apart when I get it off the pan.. I even leave it longer so it can get crispy but it just don't work.. What my doing wrong? I really want to make this food!

ReplyDeleteOh my gosh, I'm never going back to taco shells ever again! My son, who's 6, ate three pieces and finished off what his almost 3 year old sister didn't eat. I had two pieces and could of ate more, but husband has to eat when he comes home. LOL This is definitely a keeper!!
DeleteJust an fyi for those of you who want to use crescent rolls instead of potatoes for the crust. Pillsbury now makes a roll of crescents that are not cut into triangles..its one full sheet of crescent heaven :)

ReplyDeleteThis was soooo good but we used masa (tamale mixure) for the crust...I prebaked for 15 min ..I also added tomato bullion, oregano, salt, pepper, cumin and a little bit of cayenne pepper to the masa mixture as well to give it some flavor....everyone in my family loved this...for the meat I used ground turkey and chorizo...I used green verde salsa and added some extra spices to it I also added about a half of cup of shredded colby jack and sharp cheddar cheese to the meat mixture....this was absolutely amazing and wouldn't have had the idea of making it without looking at this recipe!

I made it tonight for dinner, my potato crust fell apart and it was more potato crumble than pie but it was VERY good! The only tin I did different was use my home made taco spices rather store bought. My hubby ate 1/2 the pie himself! Adding to our dinner rotation thank you!

ReplyDeleteMade this for dinner and it was so good! I also wondered about the crust, but I just pressed some of the potato mixture onto the sides and it worked great. I don't think it would be nearly as good with a regular pie crust. Definitely a new family favorite!
ReplyDeleteMade it twice, first time it was to mushy, second time I literally SMUSHED the potatoes in the pan to create a thinner crust, cooked it for 15 minutes, then added the meat and then cooked for 20 minutes. MUCH crispier and much better after the added cook time! Love the recipe as a whole, just needed that extra crisp!

Any tips for how to make the crust crispy? Maybe it works with potato flakes but after 20 minutes my leftover potatoes are not the least bit crispy....
ReplyDeleteFYI - I tried this tonight. About that crust: I added exactly the amounts and it was VERY dry, the flakes mostly remained dry. I had to add more milk (about 1/3 C. at least) to make the flakes sticky enough to "press" into the pie plate. By then there was quite a bit of potatoes, made a much thicker crust than the picture. The meat, browned with onions and the 1/2 C of salsa was dry-ish, and dryer when baked a further 15 minutes in the oven. BUT: it turned out very tasty, esp. with all the usual taco toppings. (I made some guacamole to go with it.) I'll make this again with adjustments.

Made 2 of these for a Pi Day party I went to last night! My two crusts came out very differently (I was rushing and probably wasn't measuring accurately enough). I knew there would be quite a few vegetarian folks at the party I went to so I made the meat one as the recipe states and another using a meat crumble substitute that is very similar to ground beef. Added a layer of cream cheese mixed with taco sauce to the shell before adding the meat substitute mixture. Both were a big hit! I have leftovers of almost all the ingredients so I'll be making another and trying to get the crust just right! Thanks for the great recipe.

I made this last night for dinner and it was a hit! I used instant potatoes made with buttermilk and the crust worked out great. It really does look and cut like a pie crust. I baked the Taco Pie in a now discontinued Papered Chef deep dish pie stone. The edges were golden brown and crisp on the outside, but tender on the inside like a normal pie. The bottom was a bit softer, but it still came out in one piece. Thank you so much for posing this recipe, using the potatoes to form the crust makes this recipe gluten free which in my household is important.

I agree... the meat mixture is dry... I added taco sauce to the salsa and meat to help it, there is NO WAY to get that much meat and so little salsa to be described as "bubbly"... also, that is a ton of dry potato flakes, so my crust is very crumbly... and is MOST DEFINITELY NOT that color shown in the picture... that is a pie crust for sure.... however, with some modifications, I think this could be really good!
ReplyDeleteI made this last night, and it was great! I used instant potato flakes for the crust and smushed it into my pie plate quite thinly, going up the sides. I think next time I'll add a bit more liquid, since the crust didn't hold together well when I served it. I think I'll also use a bit more meat and will add the tomatoes and lettuce after serving.

ReplyDeleteMine didn't turn out like yours did. :( It was just like mashed potatoes and had to spoon it. I wish I had known I would have put the hamburger meat at the bottom and put the mashed potatoes on top like a taco version of sheperds pie. It was really good though!
ReplyDeleteMy crust turned out exactly like the picture's. Just follow the directions. Plan to eat it in one sitting, as the potato crust turns a bit soggy after being refrigerated. When freshly made, it is delicious !

ReplyDeleteI am currently making this , or rather attempting, and realized my potato flakes were flavored, one baked potato and other cheese. My left over m. pot were garlic.. none will work. So i had to boil potatoes. NOt sure how fast you are able to answer, but do you think these will work for crust? What should I do to make it the right consistancy?
ReplyDeleteHi, I've made this a couple of times in different dishes and I now use ramekins and make individual taco pies. I just found it too difficult to cut and serve without turning it into a mush instead of a definite pie! I also add cracked pepper to the mashed potatoes, a sprinkling of parmesan cheese on the potato before I add the beef mince, and finely chopped raw red onion and fresh corriander on top when I throw in the lettuce. It is a hit with everybody who has ever tried it! Cheers!

ReplyDeleteI liked the flavor too, but wasn't thrilled with the crust...it was crispy on the sides of pan, but soft on the bottom....if I do it again, I think I will just bake the crust and then place the meat mixture into the pie pan and top with lettuce and cheese, etc, and not bake it again. Would keep salsa from drying out.
ReplyDeleteI think it would be better if I could use some zantham gum or rice flour so it makes more of a true pie crust....but haven't experimented enough with GF flours yet to know how to make that a success.

ReplyDeleteI made this last night. It was very good but I kept thinking I did something wrong since the crust looked nothing like this picture. The crust was very orange from the seasoniing of course and it was impossible to tell if it was turning "golden" in the oven. Once it set, we had to scoop it out. Regardless, it was pretty good! So don't get discouraged if it doesn't quite look like the picture for whatever reason.

Okay I made this for supper tonight. It looked nothing like the picture when I was done. Just bake the potatoes for 10 minutes because they are orange from the taco seasoning and they don't get golden brown. It was very good BUT needed a little more crust and crunch. Next time I will add some crunched up Doritos before adding the lettuce, tomatoes and cheese. Leave the sour cream for individuals to add themselves, because not everyone likes sour cream on their tacos.

ReplyDeleteFor those who have trouble with the potato crust, I used crescent rolls and just lined the pan with them instead of potatoes. Of course you still should pre-bake the crust. Hope that helps. ♥ Love this recipe!!

ReplyDeleteMy grandmother had this recipe years ago and when i make it 15 years ago it was wonderful. I had lost the recipe and wanted to fix it again for my family, so glad i have found it again. I don't think i added taco seasoning to crust but it does sound pretty good.
